The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) and l’Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) have each published a document aiming to improve care to older people. The Chairholder was part of the task forces responsible for the development of these two documents.
The CASN has published a description of the gerontological care competencies that new registered nurses should possess after a baccalaureate program in nursing.
As for the OIIQ, it published a framework on nursing care of people living in long-term care facilities (LTCs). This framework described the theoretical nursing and gerontological approaches to respect in this care context, as well as the essential elements of nursing practice in LTCs.
The concern of these two regulatory agencies about the care of older people reflects the complexity of their care, and the specific knowledge required.
